February 2, 2015--10 Months Down!

Dear Family,

Answers to Mom Questions:
Who are you teaching this week?  What are their stories?
We have Marta, Raul, Lirio, Tirnidad, Elizabeth, Raquel, Alejandro. Well, all of their stories is super long; that's why I haven't written many stories lately. More than anything my companion and I are working super hard, we plan to have them in the waters of baptism this weekend. We will see what goes down.

Are you still in need of peanut butter and bread?  I sent more jam (Oh, and by the way, don't throw away the jars.  Give them to a ward member or recycle them.  They are good for a lot of things and they are expensive to just throw away. And yes, I am turning into Grandma.) Well, I don't need jam or peanut butter--still full there. I usually don't ever have time to eat during the day at our apartment.

How was your trip to the Mexico City temple.  I heard that trip was a special circumstance.  Can you tell us more about that and why you guys were allowed to go?
Well, we got to go to help our ward out. We brought two investigators and we had a lot of fun there. We were allowed to go because we had just baptized the week before and had another baptism the following week.

Do you have a chance to get to know or play with little kids in your neighborhood or ward?  I ask because I sent you some stuff for them in your package. Well, let's just say kids do not play in the streets; it's too dangerous. Most of them work which is really sad to see--not important their age. Four-year-olds come up to me asking for me to buy their gum so their family can have money. Super sad.

How often do you talk to President?  Is he really as strict and stuffy as you make him sound, or does he just have high expectations and you don't want to disappoint him?  That might be a loaded question...
I talk to President every week. I told him about the photo and he probably said something to you. Sorry if that happened. He has huge expectations for me and more than anything he wants me baptizing every week without fail and a lot of other things. I don't want to let him down. [As this boy's mother, can I just say...Called IT!? For those not following our drama. Kyle got after me last week for posting an "unprofessional" picture of him on Facebook.  He tried to say that his President got upset and issued a new rule about photos on the Internet.  As his mother, I figured he was just embarrassed by the picture and used his president as leverage so I would take his complaint seriously--I know, this says a lot about our dynamic...Bottom line, Kyle has always hated pictures of himself (and video) as a little kid, so I should have known better than to share it with him. Needless to say, Marv wrote Elder Thompson this week and nicely told him to CHILL OUT!
And no, the mission president did not contact me; he has better things to do than worry about a crazy hair picture on Facebook, son.]

Have you gone anywhere cool on P-Day lately?  Are you still in the city? Nope, we have been here sleeping. Usually we are so tired from walking about 10 to 15 kilometers; it's super tiring. Yes, I am still in the city with Elder Kennington.

Well, we had a great and hard week. We had the most random things happen. People calling us white and flipping us off just out of nowhere. [In Anna's letter he talks about a lady saying, "You are white. I have nothing to say to you," on the bus] But whatever. Life happens, ya know. The district I am leading put the goal of 15 baptisms this month, and we have about 7 or 8 going for us so we are so excited. We thought we would baptize this week, but we needed permission from bishop to get the baptism. When you have over 400 less actives in the ward that doesn't really help...

We have been so blessed in this area as we are trying so hard to be obedient.

Today I completed 10 months, and next month starts the countdown. I am a little worried but super excited as the work progresses and myself in general. I've learned that the spirit is the most crucial part of this work. Without it we will never have success as missionaries. That is why we need to live so worthy of it. We need this guide and to help us in everything-- not just missionary work--in all aspects of life. I hope to keep this gift from God as I strive to do my best every day.
I am sorry that I am so serious sometimes. That is one thing that has changed a lot about me. When it's time to work, it is time to work; and when it's time to play, it's time to play.

I actually got to see my old ward of Atlatlauca this week and I saw the bishop's wife there. She gave me great advice: Stay green in the mission because green things grow. How do we stay green in general? Be thou humble. Being humble has helped me so much to control my temper... but I still lose it sometimes.

I am so excited to see/talk to you all in May... I still feel like I just talked to you yesterday, but who cares haha I get to see you Again! I love you all so very much. Have a great week.

Elder Thompson
