Learning Leadership

Dear Family,

Alright, I can't explain how crazy this week has been--so many ups and downs. First, I am so glad for the update on the General Women's Conference. It is so true many problems that we have are self created, and I will explain this more later. Also, I am glad that the ward is doing well and that everything is awesome at home.

Well, we had a baptism this week and we had a ton of fun getting this kid baptized. I tried to get this kid to accept a date to be baptized and it was really hard. He is 15 years old and he has a mind of his own, let me tell you. I never was expecting him to say yes, but it took our zone leaders' help to do it. I am so glad he made he decision to be baptized.

I also went on interchanges with our zone leader and let me tell you, he was not pleased with me at all or my district. He got after me for my attitude and the way I lead and told me that I didn't have a single attribute of a leader. He told me that I am not here to babysit my area and that I need to take the initiative and do things and be the example. I won't deny my attitude this past week was not the best. I was really
stressed out because our district in all the month had only baptized two people. But we baptized two more this past week as a district. I had let myself forget completely Chapter 6 of Preach My Gospel. I think that we all need to read that chapter. I am still learning how to be a leader, but all the stresses I had were completely self created.

Then Jose (the kid that we baptized) was also one of the problems because he didn't want to accept the date I had set, but once the zone leader came in it was all "okay"... It caused me a little stress. However, I know that this kid trusts me because he wanted me to baptize him and it was really fun
because he told me he was scared to go under the water so, I dunked the kid.... hahahaha. It was super fun yesterday.

I also am having problems with my new companion. He has a [hygiene issue] that is really gross. Plus, he keeps getting after me for the littlest things. I feel like he thinks he is the district leader or the older companion. It is frustrating, but I am going to keep working hard and doing my best. I have decided that the reason why it is super hard for us to find a lot of investigators is because the culture here is so delicate. When you tell someone to do something, they get offended and they want to do the complete opposite. That is why no one obeys laws here.

We do, however, have one guy that speaks English as one of our investigators. He lived in the United States for 20 years and moved down here because his dad lives here. However, this guy is a Free Mason...WHOO! He was also a pastor and he is struggling a ton with a lot of things in his life, but he told us he wants to have his family forever and that he wants to be happy and many many other things. I almost cried. This guy wants to change so bad and he trusts us to help him. I know that God has prepared this guy to be baptized, and we are super excited for him and his family. His name is Rafael.

I hope that I can become the man God needs me to be. A leader he needs me to be. I hope to become so much here. I
love you all so much and I am sorry if I have ever said anything offensive to anyone.

Elder Thompson
